Downtown and West Street
West Street runs right along the canal, with restaurants, shops and patios where you can watch the ships go by. The streets around downtown have older homes on mature lots, and you can walk to most of what you need.
Sugarloaf and the west end
The west end is home to Sugarloaf Marina and H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park on the lake. It’s popular with boaters and buyers who want to be close to the water.
The east side
East of the canal, you’ll find established neighbourhoods with bungalows, side-splits and family homes, close to schools and parks. Prices here are often among the most affordable in town.
Lakeshore and Sherkston
East along Lake Erie toward Sherkston, the shoreline has cottages, year-round lake homes and quieter rural roads. Nickel Beach is nearby, too.
North end
The north end, toward Welland, is the most convenient part of town for buyers who commute to Welland or St. Catharines.

Living in Port Colborne
Schools: Port Colborne High School is the District School Board of Niagara high school, and Lakeshore Catholic High School serves Niagara Catholic students. Both are in Port Colborne. Always confirm catchment by address with each board.
Commute: Highway 140 and Highway 58 connect Port Colborne to Welland, and Highway 406 continues to St. Catharines and the QEW. There’s no GO train in town, and Niagara Region Transit buses connect to Welland.
Things to do: Nickel Beach, the Friday morning farmers’ market in Market Square, the Friendship Trail, and Canal Days over the Civic Holiday long weekend in early August, when tall ships and visitors fill the waterfront. You can also watch ships pass through Lock 8, one of the longest canal locks in the world.
Local tip: Plan for the lift bridges. When a ship comes through, the bridges over the canal go up, and crossing town can take a while. So if you work on the other side of the canal, factor that in.
Local tip: Looking at a lakefront home? Ask about shoreline erosion, flood rules and conservation authority permits before you offer. Otherwise, they can limit what you’re able to build or change.
